2026 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid vs. BMW X5 PHEV Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos

The Volvo XC90 was one of the first vehicles in its segment to be offered with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain, now known as a semi-distinct model called the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid. But the value in offering such a vehicle quickly became clear, and other luxury automakers started rolling out competitors. The model that most directly competes with the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, as established by its nearly identical price, is the BMW X5 xDrive50e, a PHEV version of the more mainstream X5. How does the relative newcomer X5 compare to the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, we’ll have to take a closer look to find out.

Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid VS BMW X5 Plug-In Hybrid

The point that needs to be mentioned when comparing these two vehicles is price, with the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid starting at $77,595* and the X5 PHEV starting at $77,450. Those nearly identical prices make this a close contest at the outset. So now we need to get into the differences. While both vehicles use an AWD PHEV drivetrain, the X5 uses a 3.0-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine and a single electric motor, while the XC90 uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors. The end result is that the X5 produces more horsepower, while the XC90 produces more torque. So the X5 is quicker from 0 to 60, but it’s a difference of less than half a second.

The XC90 and X5 are almost exactly the same overall length; the difference is less than one inch. But the smaller gasoline engine in the XC90 allows for a much shorter hood, meaning that more interior space makes up the rest of that same length in the XC90, enough that Volvo was able to give it a third row of seats. So, while the X5 comes with 5 seats and no option for more, the XC90 comes with 7 seats, or you can opt for more comfortable captain’s chairs for the second row in a 6-seat configuration, certainly not something that’s available in the X5. Fold the seats down, and the XC90 has a maximum cargo capacity of 85.7 cubic feet, while the X5 maxes out at 71.2 cubic feet. These are huge advantages, but they’re made much more impressive by the fact that the XC90 will fit into the same parking spots and garages as the X5, and just as easily. It’s advantages like this that make the XC90 such a popular choice for a safety-minded family SUV.

While the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid comes with a large touchscreen display and a digital gauge cluster, just like the X5, Volvo prefers premium materials to high-tech gimmicks. So, where you’ll find a row of LED lights on the X5 dashboard that serve no practical function, you’ll find Ash wood trim pieces on the XC90. An even better example is the glass controls. BMW offers, as an extra-cost option, glass controls for things like the gearshift and start/stop button. Volvo also offers a glass gearshift, but it comes standard and is made of genuine crystal from the Swedish glass manufacturer Orrefors®. This attention to detail and use of elevated materials is typical of Scandinavian design philosophy, and the XC90 embodies it extremely well. The grille design is another excellent example. The XC90 grille is distinctive, but restrained and sophisticated, a timeless design that also manages to be contemporary. The X5 grille has a fairly unremarkable design, but is available with LED lights in it. Both vehicles offer an available Harman Kardon® premium stereo system, which is good news for music lovers. The version in the XC90 has a slightly higher wattage, but the real audio advantage for the XC90 is the availability of an even more advanced stereo system from Bowers & Wilkins. It has more than triple the wattage of the X5’s premium system, and more speakers as well, making the XC90 the obvious choice for audiophiles.

Winner – Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid

The XC90 Plug-In Hybrid could be declared the winner for its third row of seats and extra space alone. But the advantages don’t end there; the X5 just can’t compete with the style, sophistication, and refined interior of the XC90, particularly when it comes to where each brand has focused for the latest technology.
