About The Volvo XC40

Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is a subcompact take on all of the things that make SUVs so popular. That means things like sophisticated Scandinavian design, a choice of efficient and potent mild hybrid drivetrains, and industry-leading safety features. The XC40 is comfortable, thanks to things like Volvo’s legendarily comfortable seats, as well as a sophisticated climate control system. It looks good too, with signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, wheel designs measuring up to 20 inches, and even the available Black Edition appearance package. There is a long list of standard safety features as well, including cutting-edge driver assistance technology. There is a lot to like about Volvo SUVs, and the XC40 lets you have it all in a practical size.

What the Critics Say

“With the ever-evolving XC40, Volvo continues to offer one of the best luxury experiences available for the money.” – MotorTrend

“The Volvo XC40 is a small SUV that packs a big punch thanks to its appealing exterior design and its refined driving dynamics. Subcompact luxury SUVs can often lack space and class compared with their larger siblings, but the XC40 is an exception. It has a long list of standard and optional features and a roomy, handsome, and quiet cabin.” – Car & Driver

What’s New For 2026

The big news for 2026 is the return of the B4 drivetrain. This front-wheel drive option delivers better fuel economy and a lower starting price than the more powerful B5 AWD drivetrain that was the only option last year, although the B5 is still available as an option. The only other change is the addition of a Black Edition appearance package for the Ultra trim, which includes a unique grille and wheels, as well as black exterior trim.

Volvo XC40 Features

Volvo XC40

Efficient Capability

The XC40 is available with a choice of two different drivetrains. The first is the B4, which combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid system, producing a combined 194 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. This system is front-wheel drive, and serves as the standard drivetrain for the XC40. The available drivetrain is the B5, which also comes with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and mild hybrid system, but here it produces 247 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque. The B5 is also all-wheel drive, but the difference in fuel economy isn’t much, with the B4 rated at 27 MPG combined, while the B5 is rated at 26 MPG. Whichever drivetrain you choose, the XC40 boasts superior driving dynamics, and an enjoyable experience behind the wheel, whether conditions are perfect or if you’re facing adverse weather.

Volvo XC40 Interior

Luxury Interior

Volvo interiors are a master class in Scandinavian design, where high-quality materials and ease of use are the obvious focus. Dual-zone climate control is standard, and there is an available air purification system for a cabin that is as clean as it is comfortable, with some extra help from the standard heated front seats. Premium materials are found throughout, with available leather upholstery, as well as an available gear selector that is made of genuine crystal. The XC40 comes with an impressive stereo, an 8-speaker system that includes a subwoofer behind the dash. For the audiophiles out there, there is the option of a Harman Kardon premium stereo, with 13 hi-fi speakers and a total output of 600 watts. The speakers have a thin design, so as not to intrude on cargo space, something else the XC40 has a surprising amount of, with 20.1 cubic feet of space behind the back seats, or a whopping 57.5 cubic feet with the back seats folded down.

Volvo XC40 Lane Keeping Aid

Advanced Technology

Volvo understands just how much technology has improved every part of the driving experience. Even the infotainment system uses a built-in Google operating system for smooth and intuitive operation, with software originally developed in partnership with Volvo subsidiary Polestar. That software powers the 9-inch central touchscreen, as well as the 12.3-inch customizable driver display, and it works in conjunction with systems like the standard Road Sign Information. Systems like the lane keeping aid and adaptive cruise control help to take some of the stress out of driving, and the available Pilot Assist gives you an even higher level of semi-autonomous capability, so you can arrive relaxed and refreshed. Even loading and unloading cargo is made easier by the standard power tailgate.
