The Volvo XC40 is an extremely popular model, thanks in large part to how well equipped it is. It includes a long list of standard features, particularly the safety features that have given Volvo vehicles such an excellent reputation for safety. This is very good news for shoppers, but it can sometimes make it difficult to tell the different trim levels of the XC40 apart. Fortunately, our guide can help.
Core
Starting at $41,245 MSRP*
Volvo trim levels have very straightforward naming, and the Core trim comes with all of the core components that make the XC40 such an appealing vehicle. None of the paint colors offered on the XC40 are specific to any trim, so you have the full range to choose from for the Core trim. The 194-horsepower B4 FWD drivetrain comes standard, but you can opt for the 247-horsepower B5 AWD drivetrain if you want a bit more power and/or all-wheel drive.

The top trim of the XC40, the Ultra comes with nearly everything available on the XC40, including a high-end 13-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system. Volvo XC40 Black Edition
While the Black Edition isn’t exactly a trim level, it is distinct from the rest of the XC40 lineup. The Black Edition is based on the Ultra trim, and most of the equipment will be the same. The differences are all aesthetic, including a black roof, a blacked-out grille, and a choice of two different sets of black wheels. The Black Edition is offered with a choice of Onyx Black, Crystal White, Denim Blue, or Vapour Grey paint.
Volvo XC40 Optional Equipment
The XC40 comes so well equipped that there isn’t much that’s actually optional equipment. Things like the Climate Package are optional because not everyone lives somewhere where it’s necessary, and those people aren’t necessarily going to want to pay for those features.
