XC60 VS XC90 - Germain Volvo Cars South Hills

Volvo makes practical, safe, stylish, and comfortable SUVs, and as a result, they are extremely popular. The most popular Volvo SUV, indeed, the most popular Volvo model of all time, is the XC60. But there is another popular model, the XC90, which has also been a big hit with critics and the public alike. So what sets these two models apart, and in what ways are they similar? We’ve put together this guide to break it all down.

There are a lot of things about these two SUVs that are similar, or even the same, such as the standard B5 and optional T8 drivetrains. But there are important differences nonetheless. Towing capacity is obviously one of them, with the bigger XC90 being able to handle more weight, even when equipped with the same drivetrain. But probably the most important distinction is the third row of seats found in the XC90, which gives it a maximum seating capacity of 7. There’s another difference in the seating as well, the XC90 has the option of a six-seat configuration, with a pair of captain seats in place of the usual three-seat bench in the second row. The last big difference between the two vehicles is that the bigger XC90 is also offered with the B6 drivetrain. This is for those who want a bit more power, but don’t want to go all of the way up to the T8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Obviously, the big distinction between the XC60 and XC90 is size. Both vehicles are on the large size for the respective segments, but the XC60 is technically a compact, while the XC90 is technically midsize. That said, for anyone in the first or second row of seats in the XC90, the difference in space isn’t huge. Rather, it’s the existence of a third row in the XC90 at all that is the big difference. Cargo space is the other major difference between the two. The third row of seats in the XC90 takes up a good deal of what would otherwise be cargo space, but folding the third row down changes things, and folding the second row down as well gives you a huge amount of space in the back of the bigger XC90. That said, the 21.6 cubic feet of cargo space in the back of the XC60 is still quite a bit, more than enough for grocery runs and a week’s worth of vacation luggage for most people. What it really comes down to is space. If you need a third row of seats, and/or the extra cargo space, then there’s no substitute for the XC90, but if you don’t, you’re not missing anything by opting for the smaller XC60.
