About the Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90

The flagship of Volvo’s gasoline-powered lineup, the XC90, remains a favorite in the family vehicle segment thanks to comfortable seating for seven, a robust drivetrain that comes with standard all-wheel drive, sophisticated styling, and the kind of excellent safety record that you expect from Volvo. There are three trims, three drivetrains, two seating configurations, and a full range of paint colors, wheel designs, and interior trim and upholstery options, so you can dial in your XC90 just the way you want it. You can even choose between two different premium stereo systems, quite a rarity, even for a luxury vehicle. The XC90 has won praise from the automotive press and customers alike, and there is truly something for everyone with this stylish family mover.

What the Critics Say

“One reason we like the XC90 so much is that it’s far prettier than any of its competition. It’s easy for a three-row crossover to turn out as a dull box, but Volvo’s designers manage to drape delicate sheetmetal over the XC90’s bones in a way that draws the eye. On this tester, the graceful Denim Blue bodywork contrasts against chrome and brushed-metal accents. Bold lighting elements, with LEDs and the well-known “Thor’s Hammer” running lights, also add curb appeal.” — Roadshow by CNET

“After driving the XC90 again, it reminded me of why I fell in love with it initially. The style, the easy-going driving experience and the well implemented safety features still make it a standout in this class – the sum is somehow greater than the parts.” — Cars.com

Volvo XC90 Features

Volvo XC90

Versatile Capability

The XC90 comes with a choice of two drivetrains. There is a third option, the T8 PHEV drivetrain, but the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid is technically considered a separate model. The standard drivetrain is the B5 AWD, which uses a 2.0-liter engine mated to a mild hybrid system and produces 247 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. If you’re looking for more power, the available B6 AWD drivetrain also uses a 2.0-liter engine and mild hybrid system, but is tuned for a higher output of 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Both options are rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, but the B6 does go from 0 to 60 nearly a full second quicker. Whichever option you choose, you get an advanced Geartronic™ 8-speed automatic transmission, as well as Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.

Volvo XC90 Interior

Luxury Interior

Volvo’s Scandinavian design sensibilities are evident on the exterior of the XC90, but the interior is where it becomes much more obvious. It’s all clean lines and high-quality materials, from the trim available in Gray Ash or Brown Ash, to the available Nappa leather seat upholstery. Even the gearshift is made of genuine crystal, provided by the Swedish glass artisans at Orrefors®. There are two seating configurations available: a seven-seat version with a middle row bench and a six-seat version with second-row captain’s chairs. There are three stereos offered for the XC90, with the standard being a 220-watt system with 10 speakers. The Ultra trim comes with a Harman Kardon Premium Sound System, which boasts 600 watts and 14 speakers. For true audiophiles, there is Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound, which has a 1,410-watt output and 19 speakers.

Advanced Technology

Volvo has always been a major driver in the advancement of automotive technology, from being one of the only manufacturers to have offered a 5-cylinder engine to the many, many pioneering safety innovations. The XC90 incorporates advanced technology in all kinds of ways, from mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrain technology to the Google built-in infotainment operating system. And since this is Volvo, there is an especially big emphasis on safety, particularly in the form of advanced driver assistance systems. Nearly every driver assistance system Volvo has comes standard on the XC90, including things like Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and Collision Mitigation support. Options include things like a head-up display, which can help you keep your eyes on the road without missing vital vehicle information, like speed or navigation instructions.
